Batumi city guide: Georgia’s Black Sea capital
6 min read
Batumi is Georgia’s summer capital — a Black Sea city where palm-lined promenades meet bold modern architecture and a lively old town. It is compact enough to explore on foot and makes a perfect base for day trips into the Adjaran hills.
What to see
- Batumi Boulevard — a 7 km seafront promenade with beaches, cafes and fountains.
- The Old Town — Europe Square, Piazza and 19th-century streets.
- The Alphabetic Tower and Ali & Nino moving statue.
- Batumi Botanical Garden — just north of the city on a green headland.
Day trips from Batumi
Inland Adjara rewards a day out: the Makhuntseti waterfall and arched stone bridge, Mtirala rainforest and terraced tea and wine villages are all within an hour or two. A private driver lets you combine several in a single relaxed day.
Getting to and from Batumi
Batumi sits at the western end of Georgia. Kutaisi International Airport is about two hours away, Tbilisi around five to six. A private transfer is the most comfortable option — door to door, with space for luggage and the freedom to stop along the coast or in Kutaisi on the way.
